Board of Governors
The Board of Governors is the highest governing body of KU Leuven and determines the university's strategic policy. This includes overall leadership, financial planning and academic decision-making.
Key responsibilities
Strategic policy
Defines the vision and long-term strategy of the university.
Oversight and control
Monitors the implementation of policy decisions.
Financial management
Approves the budget and annual accounts and safeguards financial stability.
HR policy
Decides on appointments and statutes of academic and administrative staff.
Academic policy
Establishes guidelines for education, research and societal services.
Regulations
Approves and amends international regulations.
Representation
Represents KU Leuven in external relations and partnerships.

Rector
- Vice-rectors of the three groups (Humanities and Social Sciences - Science, Engineering and Technology - Biomedical Sciences)
- General Administrator
- Chairs of the governing committees of UZ Leuven and KU Leuven Research & Development
- Two student representatives, appointed by Stura
- A majority of external governors (not employed by or enrolled at KU Leuven)
